I have a case with a complex flow with multiple steps, each step is a set of sticky notes that sort or overlap. I have been copying and pasting each step. If something changes I have to change it in all the copies, though this could be easily done with layers.
We’ve got something exciting to share that we know many of you have been waiting for, So sit back and peel back the layers of this message 😆 —because Layers are now available in Miro!
With Layers, you can now tailor your diagrams or presentations to fit any audience. Whether you need a high-level overview or a deep dive into the details, Layers let you create multi-dimensional views and switch between them seamlessly, all on the same board. It’s the perfect way to keep things clear, organized, and relevant for everyone.
This feature is a direct result of your feedback, and we’re thrilled to finally bring it to life! We’d love to hear how you’re using Layers and how it’s making your workflow easier.
I really miss the ability to have objects on layers. These layers could be switched on and off so that you could show all items that are of a certain type.
it would be great if we can have objects that we can share across layers
so I document data flows, from the data source to the reporting data base and then from the reporting database to and through the reporting tool, it can get very busy with lines going to and from lots of objects. It would be good to be able to have ETL lines on one layer and the reporting lines on another where the ‘shared’ boxes/objects were on both.
I don’t need layers but frames within frames would be so useful to help me organize multiple session or artifacts into a larger narrative or structure.
Because layer functionality is partly about sync’ing and hiding information in groups I wanted to share my updated widget sync plugin on the marketplace: https://miro.com/marketplace/carbon-copy/
It would be possible to have different shaped widgets cover various parts of your information, then reveal them by changing only one widget’s colour.
This is part of a neat new feature which behaves a little like overrides on components/symbols. We tried sync’ing groups of widgets as that would offer a degree of layer like functionality but it’s unreliable so we gave up.
I’d love to see layers here. My thoughts on the problems this would solve
1 - When working with teams to create complex diagrams (e.g. process flows) I like to use dotted lines to call out text based commentary on some of the sticky notes we connect with more detail. I’d like to be able to turn this off and just see the headline flow in a clean version
2 - I’d like a private layer. A private spot for my thoughts which the rest of the team dont see. That could be who I’m thinking of assigning tasks to, answers to questions for students or just my own notes
3 - I often want to reveal things in stages, almost like an interactive presentation. That could be done similarly to powerpoint animations by assigning items to a layer and controlling how layers become visible. Think of the pub quiz when questions appear one at a time then answers linked to them
The main issue is we still need the functionality to link items across layers - they cant just be static. For instance my private layer should maintain connections to items in a shared layer even if the items have moved around
The need for reordering, hiding, and managing layers within a frame is super vital. Perhaps take some insight from Photoshop and other image/graphic manipulating platforms to help gather inspiration for this.
For me, there is a tremendous need to offer the ability to adjust objects and frames by various layers well beyond “send to back” or “send to front”.

Totally Agree ! Similarly to all design applications (Photoshop, Affinity Designer, Procreate, you name it), we need to be able to organise elements in layers. We could then :
Lock layers
Display layers at will
Group layers
Position layers above/under one another
Layers would enable us to:
Efficiently (and safely) lead a workshop where you make participants build over the previous step
Handle complex / rich linkage between elements (in a stakeholder map for instance - in BPM) and be able focus the attention on a particular group of links
Quickly lock / unlock elements at will,
Highlight the difference between 2 versions of a board (as easily as switching from Layer 1 & Layer 2).
Absolutely need the layers to reduce the initial complexity of my diagrams. I want to be able to show people diagram with current problems and again with solutions but, for now I need to copy the diagram and change things etc...
please, Please, PLEASE LAYERS! Too many use cases to list, in fact all mine have been described already! LOVE Miro. Don’t make me go back to Luc… “Friends don’t let friends LucidChart!”
Doing research for my BA paper. Want to be able to cross reference lots of geographic points on a map. Would have been SO nice to do it with layers. One layer for each kind of data on the map. Also, different map colors in layers. Just came here to cheer this on. LAYERS LAYERS LAYERS! <3
