Hi!
I’m planning a systems mapping workshop to assess climate resilience in a geographical area. The workshop is usually done in person and participants use cards, place them on a map, and link them together.

Due to the current situation we have moved to an online workshop hosted on Miro. We have created a board with a couple of maps and a large number of icons(cards) to be copy/pasted onto the maps by participants. Due to the scale we are working on, it requires quite a lot of zooming in/out and navigation to move from the map area and the icons. As seen during some tests, this can be difficult for some participants not familiar with tools like Miro.

Would there be a way to either:

  • Freeze a part of the board (similar for example to excel), so that the icons are always in views and can be quickly copy/pasted from the map?
  • Or; Creating a drop down menu that could be accessed from anywhere on the board? either through existing tools or maybe plugins?

Using the frames panel has been tried, but it also requires a lot of navigation and introduces other issues such as the frame title and border covering elements.

Thanks in advance!

P.s: Having a way to prevent participants to unlock elements would also be great.

@Tim Giger -

One potential workaround for this is for a participant to just open the same board twice (in different tabs for example if using the web browser app). They will show up twice in the participants panel at the top, but with that approach, they could have their focus on one browser window on the icons, and the other browser window on the portion of the map area they wish to drop the icons onto. Then, they’d just do a Select, Ctrl-C in the first window and a Ctrl-V in the second one.

You could also create a board with just the icons like a library and have that open in one browser window and the map in a different board opened in another browser window. That would avoid participants showing up twice in the same board if that is going to get too confusing.

@Tim Giger :

Based on the idea of Kiron:

You can work either on the same board with a link inside you like go jump the participants to  - or create a seperate new board where you link into the section of the specific board:

  • On board one you create the section where you want to jump the users into
  • Second board a new board with the link inside (This board is only open on your side) as a additional little window
  • You work in your main board and then:
    Click on the link - additonal use the Attention Management-Tool:

    Bring everyone to me and: Swoooshhh … everybody is exact there where you need them to be.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Using tabs to quickly move through parts of the boards or even different boards is a good idea. It might not be as ‘polished’ as something like a drop down menu, but it should work and is simple enough to explain to participants.

Thank you for the suggestions.
