Allow OKTA SSO users to edit profile photo

Hi. I understand that users who are authenticated via SSO cannot edit a lot of their profile info (name, photo, etc) because these are automatically sourced from a company’s SSO database.

However, some SSO vendors, like OKTA, do not support user profile photos. The impact of this is that these users have no way of adding or customising their profile photo, either through MIRO or Okta.

My feature suggestion: allow OKTA SSO users to add / edit their MIRO profile photo.

Was it helpful?

Same for Azure AD. Totally ridiculous, and hostile towards business users who are paying more only to get less.

And here is the kicker: Although login to the Miro Community (this site!) is also powered by the same SSO, I can freely change my profile picture 😂🤯

+1 (me too):

FYI also, I believe the problem is at the Microsoft side. Please upvote this on the Microsoft forum: Push Profile Photo and Manager via scim · Community (azure.com)

Agreed, this is disappointing considering the license fees.

We operate in remote working environment and the ability to set profile pictures is elementary to maintaining company culture. Putting a face to a name will make it easier for new team members to find their way and simplify collaboration.

Hi @allyak @vsieb @Urs Kemmann @Ian Donaldson

Thanks for raising this and sharing your experiences! I can see how it would be a bit limiting not to have control over your profile photo. I’ve reached out to our internal team to see if there are any updates or possible workarounds for this situation. As soon as I hear back, I’ll be sure to let you all know.

Thank-you @Eca for looking into this.

My organisation is working around this problem as follows:

  • Modify organisational setting to allow users to update/upload their Profile Picture.
(This can be a little bit confusing for some users though, because of very prominent banner on that page stating Their Details are managed by the organisation.  … Except for the profile pic though, lol).
  • I then just nudge/remind teams to update their profile pic and how to do that.
Alas, most people can’t be bothered (profile maintenance exhaustion).

Hi @Ian Donaldson

Thanks for sharing your workaround with the community! It’s a great approach to modify the organizational settings to allow users to update their profile pictures, even if it can be a bit confusing with that banner. I completely understand the “profile maintenance exhaustion”—it’s something we all face at times!

I also wanted to share an update from our team: Profile pictures are pushed from the organization’s IDP to Miro, so users aren't able to make changes directly in Miro. If the IDP doesn't support profile pictures, then, users won’t be able to have a profile picture at all.

Your efforts to nudge and remind your teams to update their profile pics are appreciated, and I’m sure others in the community will find your solution helpful. If you need any more assistance, feel free to update us in the Community.
