Miro’s BPMN shapes include start, intermediate and end events but not the various event types, e.g. timer events and message events. This means that I can’t create a complete BPMN diagram like I can in many competitor tools.

Completely agree, the BPMN set is essentially useless with only half of the shapes I need.

Turns out, they do have the types but they're hidden in the menu where you can change the colour and font, I expected them to be in the diagramming menu.

There are many gateway types which are missing. The only gateway type available is an OR gateway. For this reason, I use a mix of BPMN and Flowchart (icons directly above BPMN in Diagramming). The workaround is not ideal though, because the BPMN icons have nice text blocks included, whereas the Flowchart icons to not.
