Like in illustrator, I would like to be able to copy an object from one frame to another in the exact same location from the top left corner of the frame.

@Omar Geneidy - @Davy is correct. This is already possible. I just outlined in in detail in this post:

@Luke Pettigrew - When pasting to the destination frames, you need to first select the destination frame, otherwise pasting just pastes to where your cursor is.

Was it helpful?

Hello Omar, I believe this is already implemented.

If you copy the content in one frame, then select the next frame and hit paste, it will appear in the exact same location.

Copy and paste in the same location

I’m trying to do this, but it keeps pasting on the cursor’s location? Any ideas? Thanks!

I’ve been trying to do this, and even though I am sure I’m selecting the destination frame, it still keeps pasting where the cursor is. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

@gpesce

To recap:

  1. Select an object(s) that is in a frame
  2. Copy it, either using the context menu or Ctrl/Cmd + C
  3. Select the destination frame(s)
  4. Paste using Ctrl/Cmd + V

Demo:

Does this feature not work with items written by hand/with the pen? That seems to be the only difference I can find in what I am working with compared to what you’re showing. I am a teacher and I take notes by hand using a stylus on an ipad, and then I copy/paste the written notes into copies of the same board for my other classes, but I always have to move things around to get them in the right place. I am 100% sure I am following the steps you provided to do this correctly.

@gpesce - I just tried with pen drawn lines and the behaviour was the same. However, I am doing this from a desktop vs. the tablet app.

I typically do the writing with the tablet, but doing the copy/pasting from my laptop. But I also just now tried writing with the pen tool on the laptop and then copying to another frame, and my results are still pasting wherever my cursor is.

Could it possibly have something to do with the fact that I am writing on framed pdf pages? I have been testing all of this out throughout the day, and I just now seemed to be able to get the pen drawn lines from one blank frame to another, but not from a framed pdf page to another.

@gpesce - Now that you mention the drawings were on top of another item, I see what is happening.

Disclaimer: This will get a bit nerdy 🤓

As soon as you put drawings on top of another item, they are automatically “grouped” – not via the common Grouping feature in Miro, but in similar to when you put an item in a Frame; when you move the frame, the item moves too – in the background, the drawing now has a parentId associated with it, with the ID value being that of the frame. This is all done so that, when you move your main object, e.g., your PDF, the drawing moves too.

In order for the paste-in-same-location from one frame to another to work, the item you are copying must be the child of a frame, i.e., it must have a parentId equal to that of the frame. However, with drawings, their parent ID will be the PDF, and the parent ID of the PDF will be the frame.

So, what you are trying to do with drawings will not work in this instance, and this is expected and is not a bug.

To get around this, you will need to:

  1. select the PDF
  2. copy-paste it to the other frame
  3. and then delete the copied/duplicated PDF, leaving the drawing behind.

Thank you SO much! This is working perfectly for me now. I so greatly appreciate all of your help today!
