Hi,

until today I - naively - assumed that the icons that are available via Miro (and integrations such as iconfinder) can be used without restrictions. I now realise that there might be restrictions for commercial use or that attribution may be required.

I have two issues with that:

  1. you should insert the attribution / rights WITH the icon.
    If I have to go to iconfinder to find the icon and the attribution, THEN I can do that easier rightaway and NOT use the integration.
  2. You need to make this much clearer. You are putting your users at risk of litigation by only having a small info bubble. The way you offer iconfinder it is not at all clear that this is a 3rd party product and that the icons may require attribution of may exclude certain kinds of uses.

I hope you can fix this. Tbh, it’s actually quite shocking how lax this was handled from Miro’s end.

Yes and …. to store attribution information, perhaps a link to the original icon data, or attribution info could be places into the “Get Info” on a widget?

It would be very nice to know, that attribution is taken care for you when you use the Iconfinder, indeed.

 

On display of attribution

Depending on where the attribution should / must go, if it isn’t right next to the icon but somewhere in writing on the board, the most unobtrusive way might be to compile a list of attributions that can be placed in some logical header / footer area, depending on the intended use of the board. I would find it most helpful, if that list was linked to the used icons in that it changes automatically when icons are added / deleted.

For starters, some text added automatically, like I would understand the OP, would already be very helpful. Especially because editors of the board would not need to find out how to quote the media correctly and compile the information themselves.

 

On selection

While searching for icons (and images), I would find it very helpful to have a filter for intended use and attribution not required. That way I could find no-attribution assets much faster, and can still easily extend my search if I can’t find anything suitable with the filters on.
