On a Free account, if you create more than 3 editable boards, one is automatically set to “View Only” but it doesn’t let you choose which one. It should be an option to select the board you want to set as “View Only” to make room for the new board.

I totally agree. The current work-around is to copy the view-only board you want to edit. But that’s a waste of resources both for the user and the miro database.
This is why I think so.
- The user might have to copy several boards since the new copy will become board number 4 and that will trigger another automatic view-only “downgrade”. And that may be another board that the user wishes to keep active.
- Using this work-around will create duplicates, sometimes more than one. This will clutter up the workspace which may interrupt the workflow.
- To remedy that the user might start to delete duplicates and then run the risk of deleting the latest version.
- The miro database will have to maintain unnecessary data for each duplicate. And yes, there are hopefully deduplication algorithms in place in the database. But with the amount of users in the system there will still be an extra strain on the system. Which the users will end up paying for.
I’m pretty sure that this is a strategy to get free users to upgrade to a paid plan. Because if free users could just switch between boards all the time they would have very little incentive to pay for more boards. And that’s totally fair! But there must be better ways to do it.
There could for example be an option to archive active boards so that they are not even viewable. Archiving an active board would make space for another active board. Activation of archived boards should be time-gated in order to avoid exploitations. 1 month would be reasonable I think.
