Sketchup has a nice selection option where drag selecting from left to right selects anything intersecting the selection rectangle and drag selecting from right to left selects anything contained within the selection rectangle. This allows one to select overlapping objects easier.

For any readers who didn’t already know, as of this reply you can click/tap-and-hold to turn your cursor into crosshairs before dragging to only select objects fully contained within the selection rectangle.
That same tap-and-hold is helpful when attempting to not immediately click and drag some large item that extends off the viewport, like a shape you are nested down within.
