When a user selects an object, it blocks other users from interacting with it. This frequently becomes a problem when one of the objects has a URL link in it. A user selects the object to expose the link, they click on the link and are brought to the other web page BUT that miro object is still selected and no other user is able to interact with it (which is necessary to access the link it holds).

Proposal: After clicking a link, the object that was selected should be unselected to enable other users to access.

Also, ideally, any selected object that a user has should be unselected after some duration of inactivity (30 seconds? 60 seconds?). I’ve seen instances where someone has selected an object, then got pulled into some other activity, meaning no one can collaborate on the selected object.

Was it helpful?

@Randall Willms Personally, I think a better solution would be to add a manual “Unblock object” option (when right-clicking the object, for example). Automatically unselecting an object upon clicking a link is prone to a lot of errors. If someone is actively working on an object and someone clicks a link, what then?

A manual option could come with a warning, and having users making an active choice is usually prone to less unexpected errors.

Workarounds to remove the lock:

1. Use the Bring user to me - this will remove any locks that user currently has

2. You could aslo quickly switch the access to "View" mode from "Edit".

Both of these options would depend on your role on the board, the lockers role (guest, visitor, team member) etc.

If a user clicks a link to go to a web page, I think that is a good indication that they are no longer working on the object (they have left the board and are now on the webpage). If someone clicks a link and immediately returns so the board, then they would still be actively editing it. There would only be a small window when someone would be able to “take control”. We don’t typically have “control battles”, its just this scenario where people are constantly accidentally blocking other users because the UI forces them to.

The “bring user to me” does not unlock the object (just tested it)

Switching someones access permissions seems like a long path to overcome this design issue, and as you called out, is limited to those with access to that.

You can also lock the object to begin with. I can't eyes this right now, but with sticky notes and text object, links can still be accessed while the object is locked. Again, all just workarounds for the root cause.

@Randall Willms - Now that I am back home and at a computer, I was able to test this myself.

To clarify, when a user just selects an object - it is only when then edit it, e.g., double-click to go into edit mode or click-and-drag to move it that it will become locked.

In this example, the user on the right clicked on the link, the hyperlink is still not present - they must click on it again, which when the object has already been selected, puts it into edit mode. Once they have it locked, I was able to bring them to me which unlocks it:

But when the object is locked to start with (by the person who created it), the link can still be accessed:

I supposed the better experience would be for Miro to display the link as soon as the object is selected. I can only get the link to show on a single-click/select of an unlocked object if I click just anywhere but directly on the link text:

Can you detail the exact scenario in which objects are becoming locked?
