Question

Paid subscription does not lift the MCP 100-call limit — and how do I stop board sharing from adding billable seats?

Hello everyone,

I have run into two things today that I cannot resolve on my own, and I would be grateful for an answer from anyone who knows how this actually works — Miro staff or otherwise.

1. A paid subscription has not lifted the MCP call limit

I use Miro through the Model Context Protocol. On the Free plan there is a hard ceiling of one hundred tool calls per day per organisation. Once that ceiling is reached, every call is refused with:

"Your organization has reached its daily Miro MCP tool call limit of 100 calls on the Free plan. The limit resets tomorrow."

I hit the ceiling in the middle of a single editing operation, which left my board half-finished: the text was written, the images and the accompanying explanation were not. So I followed the upgrade link in the error message and bought a subscription.

The limit did not lift. Every call since then returns exactly the same message, still describing my organisation as being on the Free plan — including user_who_am_i, which does nothing at all. I have checked that the integration itself is healthy and connected, and I have tried repeatedly over several hours.

My questions:

  1. What has to happen for a purchased subscription to take effect for MCP access, and how long does it normally take?
  2. Is there an action required on my side — reconnecting the integration, re-authorising it, something else?
  3. If I bought the subscription on one team while the board lives on another team, would that produce exactly this symptom? The limit is described as being per organisation, so I suspect this may be the cause. How do I check which team the board belongs to, and how do I correct it if they do not match?

2. How do I stop board sharing from adding billable seats?

This is the second thing, and it is the reason I hesitated to subscribe again at all.

On previous occasions I have shared a board with someone and later discovered that my subscription had gone from one seat to two. I was never shown a prompt, a confirmation, or any approval step. The seat was simply added and the charge followed.

I do not want to run a team and I do not want to pay for anybody else. If someone wants to use Miro, they can hold their own subscription. I am happy to share boards; I just want that act to have no effect on the number of seats I am billed for.

My questions:

  1. Which exact setting prevents a person from being added to my team when I share a board with them? I would appreciate the full navigation path rather than a general description.
  2. Once that setting is in place, is it guaranteed that no sharing action can create an additional billable seat?
  3. What is the difference, in billing terms, between sharing a board with someone as a guest and having them become a team member — and which one does a normal share link produce?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed light on either of these.

Michel

@MichelBuchner  I can't speak to the MCP server, but here's a bit of information about members versus guests versus visitors.

Adding Guests

If you enter an email address in the top box and click Send invitations:

You should then get this prompt, where you would need to select Guest:

More info on the different access roles can be found here:

Thanks,

that's worth investigating. What I'm so curious about if they can bill me as a private person for other members, this concept is wild and unprecedented.

miro has a seat in NL and I can imagine they are not allowed to do this…maybe it's worth looking into it from an AP perspective

but to be honest, this whole subscription thing is really opaque…

thanks for the reply
