Why does pressing "align items" cause overlap?

I have a bunch of images that I want to align automatically. But when I select them and press “align horizontally” or “distribute” they just overlap in one big pile.

    @jaymeena - It has been a while since I have even used the align/distribute feature - probably because it it is confusing and finicky.

    As you can see in this GIF, it will distribute objects horizontally or vertically, but it will not do both at the same time. I would suggest trying the Auto Layout feature, which is what I show in the same GIF:
