Timeline Template can't be edited by guests

Hello all together,

we have encountered weird behaviour in the timeline template (https://help.miro.com/hc/en-us/articles/20185235301650-Timeline#h_01JDNQ9FWHESTAYGV25JG7ZJM4 ) where guests can’t edit anything. We can’t find a solution and even our IT-Team has no idea. So maybe here is someone who has an idea. Since this timeline is now covering the whole year we would really appreciate any help so we don’t have to redo all of it.

I have created a board so our customer (no miro account, shared via link) and our project manager (paid account) can plan the topics for the year dynamically. Our PM decided to use the mentioned timeline template and it worked well for 2 month now. on Tuesday, 1.4., they encountered a problem where they are both unable to edit the template. All action buttons are disabled and they can’t move any tasks. I, as the board owner, am still able to do so. So first question: How is it possible, that it stops working after 2 month?
We experimented a bit and found out that if someone clones the template both are able to edit it again for a short period. After around 2 hours it is disabled again. Except for me. We also asked colleagues and it has the same behaviour. Noone except myself can edit. (Just to mention it: It is no option that I make the editing for them :P ). We experimented with different boards, different admins, new, empty templates, all we could think of. Nothing worked.

I hope anyone can help with that.

A few more information:

  • the template is not locked
  • the board is shared via link with editor rights

Hi @PG2507,

I also got the update from the team and here’s what they shared:

Miro’s Data Tables feature recently moved out of beta and is now generally available. With that transition, Miro refined permissions for certain advanced widgets like Data Tables and Timelines. Currently, guests and visitors have view-only access to these widgets — even if they have full editor access on the board itself.

If you or others need to edit Data Tables or Timelines, you’ll need to be invited as full members of the team, not just guests. This change helps ensure more sensitive or complex features are only editable by trusted collaborators.

That said, the team is aware of some inconsistencies, especially with boards or templates created during the beta phase. They’re actively investigating this to make sure permissions behave as expected moving forward.

Thanks again for surfacing this! I know these transitions can be a bit jarring, so really appreciate your patience while things get smoothed out.

Let me know if you have any other questions I can help with!

Hi @PG2507,

Thanks for the detailed explanation — and welcome to the Miro community!

A few things to check or try:

  • If your customer and PM aren’t logged into a Miro account (or are accessing via public link), they may be considered “visitors,” and certain app features like Timeline might limit interactions.

  • The fact that cloning the template resets access temporarily suggests it may be session- or permission-state related.

  • Even if the board is shared with editor rights, some objects or templates (especially newer features) may need contributors to be part of your team or to log in.

This sounds like it may require deeper backend investigation. I'd recommend reaching out to Miro Support directly so they can dig into your board’s logs and permissions more closely.

Thanks again for documenting everything so clearly!

Hi,

thanks for the answer. I also had a chat with miro support and they told me, that it works as designed, except that they can edit it after cloning. That’s a bug. So non-members aren’t supposed to edit the timeline at all. So there is unfortunately no solution for my problem. :(

Thank you either way for your help :)
