Hi everyone,
Sharing a problem I spent a while tracking down, in case it helps others and in the hope that Miro can fix it.
Symptom
After updating to macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1, the Miro desktop app (0.11.168, arm64) started launching on its own every now and then, without me opening any board. After I uninstalled the app, macOS instead kept showing the dialog "There is no application set to open the URL miroapp://miro.com/app/board/…" a few minutes after every login.
Cause
I had four Safari bookmarks pointing to old Miro boards. They were in ordinary bookmark folders and not open in any tab. Safari seems to load bookmarked pages in the background, probably to fetch icons. Because "Always open in Desktop app" is enabled by default on each board, the board page immediately redirects to miroapp://, and that launches the desktop app. The macOS system log confirmed that the miroapp:// requests came from Safari, with no matching open tab.
Fix
Deleting those bookmarks solved it completely. No more launches or dialogs after a restart.
Suggestions for Miro
- Only redirect to the desktop app after a user action, such as an "Open in app" button, or at least only when the page is actually visible. A background page load should never launch the app.
- Add a global, account-level setting to turn off desktop-app redirects. Today the setting is per board and on by default, which is hard to manage with many boards.
- Check the help article "Disable Miro desktop pop-up in your browser". After uninstalling the app, I couldn't find the setting in the board menu in the browser on the board I checked.
I've also reported the Safari side to Apple (FB…), since a background load shouldn't be able to launch an external app.
Environment: macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1 (Apple silicon), Safari 27.0.1, Miro desktop app 0.11.168 (arm64, now uninstalled), Free plan.
I have submitted the issue to Apple as well with the ID FB25035855.
Has anyone else seen this? Workaround if you have: check your Safari bookmarks for Miro board links.
