I’ve just discovered that Miro has removed password-based login and now requires a magic link sent by email.
This creates a very serious problem in my case: I no longer have access to the email address associated with my Miro account.
Until now, this wasn’t an issue because I knew my login and password and could access my account and all my boards normally.
Now, because of a change made by Miro, I am suddenly locked out of years of work and have no way to access my boards.
To make matters worse, I actually had to create a new Miro account just to post this message on the community forum, because without access to my original account, I couldn’t even ask for help here. So I am currently posting from a brand-new account to try to recover access to my actual account and my boards.
What I find particularly problematic is that, as far as I know, there was no warning before making such a major change to the authentication system. Had I been informed that password login was going to disappear, I could have changed my email address while I still had access to my account.
Looking through this forum, I can see that I’m clearly not the only person affected. Several users are reporting problems with the new magic-link system, including people who no longer have access to the email address associated with their account.
This is not a minor UX inconvenience. It is an account and data access issue.
Users may lose access to an email address for many perfectly legitimate reasons: changing employer, leaving a university, an old domain being closed, changing provider, etc. An authentication system should anticipate these situations and provide an alternative way to prove account ownership.
I can provide information to prove that the account and boards belong to me: previous credentials, board names, shared boards, account information, etc.
Could someone from Miro please explain:
-
How can users who no longer have access to their original email address recover their accounts and boards?
-
Is there an identity/account ownership verification procedure?
-
Why was password authentication removed without giving affected users an opportunity to update their account information beforehand?
-
Is Miro planning to provide an alternative recovery mechanism for situations like this?
I have used Miro for years and have important work stored in these boards. Being suddenly locked out because the authentication method was changed without warning — and having to create another account simply to ask for help — is simply unacceptable.
I would really appreciate a concrete solution from the Miro team.
