[INVESTIGATING] Bug: "Choose a team" dropdown won't select when non-owners try to duplicate a board (Free plan)

Hi Miro team,

I'm having a recurring issue trying to let other people duplicate one of my boards into their own accounts.

Context:
- I'm on the Free plan and I'm the board owner.
- I share the board link with my students so they can click "Duplicate/Copy" and create their own copy (this always worked before).

Problem:
- When I (the owner) click to copy, the "Copy board to account" modal only shows a name field and a "Share with the same people" checkbox — no team field. The copy works fine.
- When my students (external accounts, not part of my team) click the same link and try to copy, the modal shows an extra "Choose a team" field with a dropdown that says "Choose". This dropdown won't open / won't let them select any option, and without choosing a team the "Copy" button doesn't proceed.
- This happens with several different students, different accounts.
- Tested on more than one device/browser (tablet and desktop with Microsoft Edge) — same behavior every time.
- The students already have an account and a team created in Miro (auto-created at signup).

So the bug seems specific to the "external visitor copying a board" flow — it doesn't happen when I do it as the owner.

Example board link: [paste your board link here]

Could you check if there's a known issue with this component for Free plan accounts? Happy to send screenshots/video if useful.

Thanks,
Marcela Oliveira

Update #1:

I’ve shared this information with our Engineering team so they can review it further and confirm the expected behavior for Visitors on a Free plan board. I will update you in this thread as soon as we hear back from them.

@Marcela Oliveira Nice catch! I can replicate this on my end. Since you are on a Free Plan can cannot open a support ticket, I have converted your post into a support ticket — you should receive an email notification of the ticket’s creation.

Support team: I am able to replicate this issue in Chromium and Gecko browsers, but only in the current GA UI — not the Spaces beta update.

@Robert Johnson Thanks!

Hello, I just made an account and am trying to duplicate a board I have a link for.

However, when I press Duplicate, the following menu asks me to choose a team. And the drop down does not work, no teams appear for me to choose. Pressing the Copy button also does nothing, I don’t see anything in my boards. I’m lost, please help, when I search the topic the copy menu does not look like this either, there’s no ‘Choose a team’ option.

The menu when presing the Duplicate option

No boards appear, even when I press Copy

@JakeTheSnake I merged your post with this existing one. There does appear to be a bug which is preventing users from accessing the "choose team" dropdown which is required to successfully duplicate/copy a board.

I'll update this post as I hear back from the support team.

This sounds like a frustrating issue, especially since the duplication worked normally before. The fact that it affects multiple external accounts and browsers makes it seem more like a platform bug than an account specific problem. Hopefully Miro can identify the issue quickly.

I’m having the same problem and need a quick solution, as my students are unable to duplicate the board.

I am providing additional information regarding the issue:

1 - Everything was working fine until yesterday; students were always able to duplicate the board using the guest link or the password-protected board link I sent them.

2 - No changes have been made to the board's permission settings in recent days, yet the platform has simply stopped allowing my students to duplicate the board.

3 - I accessed the board myself via a guest link using a secondary account and confirmed that this issue is indeed affecting everyone.

4 - I created a new board from scratch and shared the link with the correct settings, but it is still impossible to duplicate the board.

5 - The general report is that when clicking "Duplicate board," the selection box for choosing a team simply does not work; it remains static and frozen, making it impossible to select an existing team or create a new one to duplicate the board into.

6 - All users are properly logged in and have accounts on the platform.

7 - The problem clearly lies with the platform itself, and I ask that you investigate this as soon as possible, as I am being severely impacted by this glitch.

8 - Attached are some screenshots and evidence of the issue:

Hey, all. If you really need to get a copy of the board in your students hands before a fix is released for this issue, there is a workaround, but that will require some effort on your part. If you’re down for that, read on.

From my poking around in the browser’s console at what might be happening, I realized there is another board duplication entry point that would likely still work — and did work. It is to use the Duplicate action from the dashboard. The modal that opens from the dashboard works as it does not have the Choose a team select box. However, without the Choose a team option, this means:

  1. the duplicate will be created in the same team
  2. and because the user will need to execute the Duplicate action from the dashboard, they must be a full member of the team.

Here’s what to do

💡Tip: Do this all using two separate browsers (or an incognito window), so you don’t have to keep signing in/out of Miro.

  1. Create a new free plan team using an email address that you’ve never used with Miro before.
  2. Once the new team is in place, add your current email address/Miro account profile as a team member. Now, from your main/old Miro account, you’ll be able to switch between the two teams.
  3. From your main account, Duplicate the board you want to share with your students.
  4. Move the duplicate to the new free plan team you just created.
  5. Switch to the new team.
  6. From the board’s Share settings, use the Copy team invite link button ** with the permissions set to Can view ** — once you click the button, you’ll have a link in your clipboard that, once clicked by someone, they will be added to the team as a full member and will have view-only access to the board.
  7. the student will click the link, be added as a full team member, and will be on the board.
  8. then they would click on the Miro logo (or home icon the left sidebar) to go to the dashboard.
  9. from the dashboard, they access the board’s mail menu using the ellipsis dots and they select Duplicate
  10. they will be prompted with what they want to name the board — to identify the copy as theirs, they should prefix it with their name. Now they click Copy. Now they have a board they own in this new free plan space.
  11. Finally, they move that new board to their own team.

Once this is all done, you can remove all of the students from the team. Or you could just delete the team altogether, but, given this very bug we’re dealing with, perhaps it’s better to just keep it around for these one-offs.

If you decide to proceed, here are instructions you could share with your students:

I create a new team called [TEAM NAME] where you can copy the [BOARD NAME] board from.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Click this link to be added to the new team, with view-only access to the board you need to copy: [INSERT TEAM INVITE LINK HERE]
  2. Once on the board, click on the Miro logo at the top-left to go to the [TEAM NAME] team dashboard.
  3. Open the [BOARD NAME] board’s menu using the three dots.
  4. Select Duplicate.
  5. When the popup opens, in the “Enter a new board name” field, add your name at the beginning, so you know which one is yours. Click the Copy button. Once the new board has been created, if it is opened, click the Miro logo to go back to the dashboard.
  6. From the newly created board’s menu, select Move to team and select your team.

You now have a copy of the board in your team.

It will likely take you 15–30 minutes to go through the above, but it’
