How to stop the new 'turn into slides feature' unlocking frames

The new feature where frames can be turned into slides is causing havoc on my boards. It means that frames that were locked can be unlocked (even with the shield lock). The only way I have found to stop it is changing the access from ‘editor’ to ‘can comment’ but this means those with the board link cannot even add sticky notes (which we do a lot).

Help please!! The impact this morning resulted in a chaotic session :(

Hi @Clare vdw,

Thanks for flagging the issue!

Just wanted to share a quick update from the Miro Support team:
This behavior is not expected, and the engineering team is actively working on a fix. While there’s no ETA yet, it’s been confirmed as something they’re aiming to resolve.

If you’re running sessions in the meantime, a temporary workaround is to avoid turning locked frames into slides during collaboration — or to duplicate the board and prep your slides beforehand if possible.

We’ll keep you posted here as soon as there’s any news. Thanks so much for your patience and for helping us surface these issues!

Use presentation mode or a duplicate board instead, I hope it won’t mess with locks

Hi Clare, this is a known issue with the new 'turn into slides' feature. Currently, the only workaround is limiting access to ‘can comment’, but as you mentioned, it restricts sticky note edits. Another option is to duplicate the board and use the copy for slide conversions, keeping the original locked frames intact for editing. Hopefully, the team will add a proper fix soon.

@MichaelBrown34 Are you still experiencing this? I believe this was corrected months ago. There is now a Convert to action on the context menu of most objects which opens an overflow menu, which is where the Slides action is - this new Convert to action is hidden for all users when the object is locked.

Hi,

I totally understand your frustration it sounds like the new “frames to slides” feature is interfering with locked content on your boards. From what you’re describing, it seems that even frames with the shield lock can be edited once converted to slides, which can definitely disrupt live sessions.

A few things you might try in the meantime:

  1. Adjust board access carefully – As you noted, setting access to “Can comment” preserves locks, but limits sticky note creation. For now, you might consider temporarily creating a separate board for live collaboration while keeping the original board as “editor” but avoiding slide conversion until the feature stabilizes.
  2. Duplicate locked frames – Before converting frames to slides, duplicate them. Keep one version locked for reference while using the other for slides.
  3. Provide feedback to Miro – This seems like a bug or unintended behavior with the new feature. Reporting it via Help → Give Feedback or through the community helps them prioritize a fix.

Unfortunately, until the feature is updated, there’s no way to both allow editing of stickies and prevent unlocked slides at the same time. Planning your session around this limitation (like separating collaborative and locked content) seems to be the safest workaround.

Hopefully Miro addresses this soon it definitely has the potential to improve workflows once the locking behavior is fixed!
