hi!

i am a little bit confused what is named a “guest” and a “member”.

on the one hand there are 3 roles: visitor, guest, member, on the other hand there are 3 licenses: full member, free, free restricted.

roles:

*) visitor is clear. you can share a public link with anyone.

*) guest: someone you invite per e-mail to your team.

*) member: someone you invite per e-mail to your team.

license:

*) guest and member can have free, free restricted and full member license.

conclusion:

*) role “member” can have the “free restricted” license and therefore can`t create boards.

*) role “guest” can have the “free restricted” license and therefore can`t create boards.

so what is the difference between guest and member?

thanks!

You’re not the first, nor will you be the last. And once you figure it out, Miro will likely update the names of the roles or they will have added more ;)

You likely found this article: Visitors, guests and members, but let’s focus on this:

So, if I add you as a Guest to a board, you will see the name of my subscription/org, but will only see board(s) that I have added you to as a Guest. And you will not be able to create any boards in the team because you are not a member. And you will not see any Spaces as Guests cannot be added to a Space.

Here’s where I would invite you as a Guest:

I’ll private message you a Guest link - you can see your messages here: https://community.miro.com/inbox/overview

Experiencing it may help it make more sense :)

Hi @Robert Johnson!

Thank you very much!

This helps.

But what i still don`t get is:

And you will not be able to create any boards in the team because you are not a member.

So i guess this means you can`t add guests to a team you can only add them to private boards with the options you described.

But when you add a user to a team and the user has the “free restricted” or “free” license then this user is a team member but can`t create / edit boards as well.

  • What`s the difference to a “guest” then? A guest also is not able to create / edit boards.
  • Can i give a guest also the license “full member”?

Thank you!

Correct.

Also correct. Only a Full (License) Member (Role) can create assets, i.e., boards, Spaces, and Sections.

What`s the difference to a “guest” then? A guest also is not able to create / edit boards.

A Guest cannot create boards, but can edit boards that (a) they have been added as a Guest to and (b) have been given Edit permissions to the board.

Can i give a guest also the license “full member”?

No. You would need to first change them from a Guest to a Full Member:

@Robert Johnson , thank you!

Yes, a guest cannot create boards, but a member with “free restricted” license also can`t create boards.

So the only difference between a guest and a team member with “free restricted” license is that the team member can see other boards / spaces which are in this team and the guest can only see the boards he has been explicitely added to.

But both can`t create boards.

correct?

Thank you!

Yes. And no.

Guests can only see/access boards they have been explicitly added to. However, another difference is that Guests can edit boards whereas a Free/Free Restricted “Member” will NEVER be able to edit a board without a “Full” License (and the only exception to that rule is if the board was set to Public/Visitor/Anyone with the link was enabled, then “anyone” with the link (and a password, if one was applied) could access the board).

thank you!

so a guest can do more than a member?

super confusing, sorry to say that.

But thank you for clarification!

@tusti

so a guest can do more than a member?

Yes, but with trade-offs re administration and security.

But thank you for clarification!

You’re welcome!

Great question! The main difference is:

  • Guest: Access is limited to specific boards they’re invited to. They can’t see the whole workspace.

  • Member: Has access to the full workspace (based on permissions) and can be assigned to more roles/projects.

Both can have similar license types, but members are more integrated into the team, while guests are external collaborators.

Hope that clears it up!

Thank you @nullsbrawlone!
