Boards vs. Templates / archiving tips

Hi Denis,

My team uses Miro a lot for workshops - we’ve setup a space in our team where we save the template boards for our workshops to keep them organised & accessible to enhance based on feedback. Once we’re happy with a version we then use the templating function (or update the template to the latest iteration). We save previous iteration sin an archive space, this way we also keep hold previous iterations.

Workshops we run with clients we also organise into spaces per client and include the date in the session (we often leave them accessible forthese teams after the session)

My answer is similar to ​@Robin Head ‘s answer, except maybe: I’ve never seen a value for templates in what I do, since I am a one-man-show (which is better than being a one-trick-pony I suppose). I keep a pristine copy of a board that I rename “originalname___ORIGINAL” and when I need to use this, I just duplicate the board. Now, while using these duplicates it invariably happens that I want to update or improve the original - and I just do that the hard way.

If you're regularly reusing the same structure for training, it's a good idea to convert those boards into Miro templates. This allows trainers to create new boards directly from the template without modifying the original. It also keeps your workspace cleaner and ensures consistency across sessions.

If you prefer to work with regular boards and duplicate them manually, we recommend the following to stay organized:

• Establish a clear naming convention (e.g., “Training – [Topic] – [Date]”)

• Use Spaces to group boards by trainer, training type, or date

In case I would decide to provide our trainers with Miro templates , what would be the best and simple way for them to create a board without modify the original template?
1. Create a new board and add the relevant template inside the board?

2. Using the Explore Templates function to open the relevant template and modify the name of the board created?
   
   I am used to the organization of Klaxoon networks and templates and I am still a little bit lost with Miro :)

Thanks for your follow-up, and totally understandable — Miro and Klaxoon organize things a bit differently, so it’s natural to feel a little lost at first. 

To answer your question: the best and simplest way for trainers to create a board without affecting the original template is to use the "Use Template" flow from the dashboard or new board menu. Here's how:

If you haven’t already, you can save your board as a template first by clicking “More actions (•••)” > Export > “Save board as template”. Once published, it will appear under “Custom templates” in the template picker so your team can easily access and apply it.

• Click “New board” from your dashboard
   

  

   

• Choose your saved custom team template
   

  

   

• Miro will generate a new board with that content, and trainers can rename it right away

This ensures the original template stays untouched and the trainer is working with a fresh copy every time.
