How can I align the objects shown above so that the connector line is straight? I’ve tried moving the object manually, and using the align and auto-align features.

Firstly, align the objects at the same level. Then, you can add the connector line.
If the lines are not straight, try adjusting the lines end points. You should be able to see where the middle points are and let the lines snap.
