Question

adding callouts in a doc

using mac mini (silicon chip), desktop miro (paid class)

i have learned to turn off the vpn, and have almost no other apps running to get smooth functionality; and only seldomly, there be lag.

however, my battle with callouts is one i’m losing. i can’t click out of a callout i create in a doc or create new callouts. and it’s odd because all other features are fine.

if more detail helps, here it is:

  • i add a doc, add heading, then add a callout
  • i’m able to type and change border color and emoji
  • but then i have difficulty clicking outside the callout into the doc, and i have to meander to other items and click in those, then try the doc again before it finally works
  • otherwise, trying to add a callout creates another block within the same border of the first callout
  • but it gets totally stuck after adding a second callout, and nothing i do gets me three in one doc (except one time after clicking around like a crazy person did i get three, but i can’t recreate that miracle, nor conjure a fourth)

i did these logical what-if’s:

  • i checked other boards, and i have the same issue
  • i’ve opened new docs in the same board, and tried copying existing callouts, but miro simply copies them into an existing callout
  • i’ve tried this across multiple days now, and same result.

again, everything else i use works fine

i’m afraid to uninstall and reinstall because i had some issues during the initial install and want to leave that as the last ditch effort

is this a common thing with callouts? (mac users or otherwise)

is a similar thing with a different feature common?

thanks in advance

@evenevan  I'm using macOS Golden Gate, M5, and can't reproduce this in the Miro desktop app or browser.

Have you tried in a browser? Does it happen there?

You could try resetting the desktop app's application data versus a full reinstall:

https://help.miro.com/hc/en-us/articles/360017572854-Desktop-app#for-macos_2

Contacting Miro support

There may still be something in your specific scenario that's causing the issue that a product team may be interested to know about.

Since you're using a paid Miro subscription, you can open a Miro support ticket by following these instructions:

https://help.miro.com/hc/en-us/articles/360020185799-How-to-contact-Miro-Support#h_01F010RXA0E1S9C0WFQYX75R6C

If you do open a ticket, if would be helpful for the rest of the Community if you could update this post with the outcome.

@Robert Johnson nice, thank you!

great point about trying it in a browser, never occurred to me.

i have reset the application data before, upon initial install. but forgot to do it here, thanks for the reminder.

i’ll try those solutions when i’m home. and yes, i know i can create a ticket, but i wanted to see if other mac users had similar issues; plus, i started a ticket recently and the auto response mentioned heavy volume, so i was trying to be nice. i’m still tinkering over here, no need fo bog down the system until i really need it

will be happy to update when i have new of any kind

update: achieved a work around, but no fix.

after the reset, i was able to click ABOVE the callout, but not below. (details below if it helps).

a hard scrub and reinstall is next when i have time.

neglected to say before: mac mini (m1, tahoe 26.5.2), miro version prob doesn’t matter, but it’s 11.187

running it in a browser didn’t help

  • same exact experience, but i’ll keep that step in mind in for the future.

after resetting the application data, one thing changed:

  • i was able to click above the callout. not below.
  • i didn’t have access to any part of the doc before except within the callout itself.
  • things get weird from here.
  • with a visible cursor finally, i used the down-arrow to click past the callout, and lo and behold, new land.
  • and moving the cursor below “work up” the whole doc, and now i could click above and below, and edit like before.
  • but it gets weird again.
  • i created a new doc to see if the bug was gone completely, but it wasn’t. but the work around fixed the second too.
  • but within the same doc, i didn’t have to do that with each single callout i added, and i could simply add callouts and click around normally.
  • until i added a third call out.
  • and trying to add a third callout is what started all of this for me. things were fine with two.
  • and now here too, the click-above workaround was good with two in the doc, but then as soon as i add a third: can’t click below IT, nor the other two anymore.
  • the click-above trick stick worked like before with one difference, i couldn’t simply move the cursor one line below the last callout to get full access. after the third callout, to be able to click in the doc, i had to manually do line returns down the page first.

if it helps to know, i always tried the focus feature and editing on the board. and i also tried placing other elements into the doc first (with no issue) and then adding a callout. and i’d try adding it before, between, and after other elements. none of that mattered.

and i doubt this is relevant but just in case: the m1 chip on the mac might be old, but it does a lot of heavy lifting on and off line with little issues. but a few weeks ago, i had to do some troubleshooting regarding multiple mac profiles and their apple ids misbehaving within a device, and across devices. and i am still decoupling and syncing where need be, but i got most of it untangled, and i am considering a full nuclear option on the profiles. all devices are mac. and the miro app is downloaded on some profiles and devices, but it is only active on one. the profiles are isolated from each other anyway, and only cross to other devices. that separation is why i doubt this is the issue, and miro wasn’t among the apps that bled through.

will update after i scrub and install, hopefully that does it.
