Resources for new guest users

Hi!

Miro used to offer some great “getting started” resources for people who have never been on a Miro board. Tutorials to practice doing basic things like navigating on a board, writing text, adding a sticky note, or adding a shape. You could watch the instructions and then practice the skills.

It’s been a while since I shared resources like this with new users and none of my old links work anymore. I’ve been searching in the Academy and the help database and cannot find anything that is designed for this entry-level user to help them feel more assured in using a board. Because Miro is super intuitive - only once you’ve learned how to use it. The resources I’m finding that are for “getting started” are about creating and designing your own boards and upselling the AI features.

Does anyone have practical resources to share with new guest users who may be technologically hesitant or unfamiliar with using much beyond basic word processing and browsing online?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Rachel

Howdy @Rachel Bolton

First I fully agree with what you say. Once you know it, you know it. But until you know it, you don’t know it - and many, many people really, really struggle.  I onboard up to 100 new people each year so I also do exactly what you want: give them a practice board that guides them through it and also shows them the features.

You might find some templates on the Miroverse, like these:

https://miro.com/templates/miro-intro-20-yrbrb8iaelrvsi2a/

https://miro.com/templates/miro-engage-playground/

https://miro.com/templates/miro-basics-guide-for-new-participants/

I wrote my own - which you might consider doing - because I could stress the specific things I needed.

Good luck!

Ken

HI @Rachel Bolton thanks for reaching out!

For new or tech‑hesitant users, a few options that work well:

  • Miro Academy has beginner-friendly video tutorials on basics like navigation, adding text, sticky notes, and shapes.

  • Template-based learning: Share a simple practice board with a few pre-set frames and instructions so users can try adding elements without fear of messing up a live board.

  • Guided walkthroughs: Use the onboarding tips and tooltips in Miro Help Center.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the early replies. @Eca  I have already been to these links. Can you point me to a specific tutorial on any of them that meets early user needs if you have ones that you’ve had experiences where it worked well?

There used to be a fantastic one called Miro 101: Content Creation - it started with “here’s a miro board” and walked through navigating the board, writing text, and adding sticky notes. It was less than 5 minutes long and had a space below it where you could enter a Miro board and practice after you watched the video tutorial. The link doesn’t work anymore and when I search the help articles and the Miro Academy I cannot find it.

To the links you suggested:

I’ve watched a bunch of videos in Miro Academy in the Miro for Beginners category and all of the ones I’ve found are a blend of what users need and what session facilitators need. I don’t want to overwhelm tech-hesitant participants with how to sign up for accounts, how to create boards, how to install templates, structure boards, etc. I just want to point them to a user guide for how to participate on a board if you’ve never used Miro before.

If I send them the link to a practice board from the Template Based Learning with no context, there is no one there to teach them how to do these simple tasks. And the templates available are way more advanced than what I’m hoping to provide. I don’t need them to know how to do risk-storming or work with OKRs. I need them to write their name using the text button on a frame and add some sticky notes. Maybe draw some connector lines from one sticky note to another. And I can’t find one that is that simple.

In the Guided walkthorughs, it’s also too advanced. The first "getting started" article is about creating Your First Board, then an orientation to the dashboard, and how to use custom templates. I”  don’t see any options that are designed solely for “I’ve shown up for a meeting and need to co-create some notes while we ideate.” And I don’t want to overwhelm them by sending them a long series of links “go here to learn how to use sticky notes, go here to learn how to move around on a board, go here to learn how to write text on a board, etc.” Having to read 6-8 help articles and watch their related videos does not set a good foundation for “we use Miro, it’s easy to collaborate here.” which is the message I want to convey.

I also looked at

I thought that the Tools article it links to might be a good starting point (https://help.miro.com/hc/en-us/sections/360003249114-Tools) but it says I’m not authorized to view this post.

Hopefully some kind of resources for new users exist. I’m sure I’m going to feel very silly once I discover where they are hiding.

Hi @Rachel Bolton

Thanks for all the detail you shared! I reached out internally to see if there are any beginner-focused tutorials or micro-learning resources that might match what you’re looking for.

In the meantime, creating a simple practice board with a few frames and step-by-step instructions for adding text, sticky notes, and connectors can help new participants get hands-on experience without being overwhelmed. I’ll update you as soon as I hear back from the team.

Hi @Rachel Bolton

Quick follow-up! I wanted to check if you’ve had a chance to go through this Miro Essentials course: https://academy.miro.com/path/miro-essentials. It covers basic actions like adding text, sticky notes, and drawing lines, and might be close to what you’re looking for.

Could you let me know if you’ve already tried this one, or if it looks helpful for your participants?

Thanks @Eca

Yes, I’ve been through Miro Essentials. All of the videos assume a person already knows how to do the basic tasks I’m after. Unless I’m missing something? Right from the Participating in Miro video as the entry to the Getting Started course, it’s glossing over the orientation stuff and diving right into Jira connected tables. Plus, it requires registering for an account and registering for a course to access. That’s a lot of friction points to get to a “miro is easy to use, if you want a little overview before we meet for the first time, go here” kind of intro.

And as for creating a simple practice board, while technically it is possible, it means that I have to create the tutorials I am hoping just exist for Miro beginners. Creating a talk track and screenshots of things like “how to make a sticky note” so that I can give them the overview. And then updating it every time Miro changes the shape or placement of buttons, how tools work, etc. If I have to, I will. It just seems like the kind of thing that would exist as a “getting started” resource for new users. Especially guest users who you are inviting to a board for a one-off meeting or short term project.

Hoping the Miro 101 video can be resurrected!

Rachel
