Data disappeared

Help - all of my data has disappeared.

From it being in use every day - to still being an active board but now empty of any of the file links I have added to it over the past year. Is there any way to retrieve this on my unpaid plan??

Please don't tell me I need to start again??

Was it helpful?

Hi @Cara Harrison,

Thanks for reaching out, and I’m really sorry to hear about this — I know how stressful it can be to suddenly see your board content missing.

Since you mentioned the board is still active but appears empty, there’s a chance the content may still be recoverable. A few quick things to try:

  • Check if the board is zoomed out or the content has shifted: Sometimes items can end up outside the visible area. You can use the "Frames" panel or hit Ctrl + A (Cmd + A on Mac) to select everything on the board and see if anything pops up.

  • Try using the Activity List (if available on your plan): Click the clock icon in the top right corner to view recent changes — it might help you locate or restore lost content.

  • Check version history: While this is typically a feature on paid plans, you might still see some autosaved versions or edits depending on your workspace history.

If none of that helps, I’d recommend reaching out to Miro Support directly with the board link and as much detail as you can (e.g., approximate last time you saw the data). They’ll be able to dig deeper into whether the content can be restored.

Let us know how it goes.

I appreciate you details and time in trying to support the situation.

I am concerned as the link to this board has been shared with someone who appears to be out to get me in all sorts of wonderful ways - and I am concerned that they have actively gone in a removed my work.

I didn’t anticipate this as being possible.

I guess what I want to confirm is once you share the link to a board and the data - can anyone else interfere with it??

I have everything saved in google docs so can easily set it up again.

There is nothing in the History since March as mentioned previously.

There is nothing in activity.

It’s just gone.

Can anyone confirm if once shared - others have joint control over a board - or just the author???

Many thanks

Hi @Cara Harrison — thank you so much for sharing more about your situation. I’m really sorry you’re going through this, especially under such stressful circumstances.

To answer your question:
Yes, if a board is shared via a public edit link, anyone with the link can edit or even delete content — regardless of whether they are a team member or not. On the Free plan, Miro allows boards to be shared by link with “Anyone with the link can edit/view/comment,” depending on what permission you chose when you shared it.

This is really powerful for collaboration — but unfortunately, it can also mean that if the link is shared with someone who doesn’t have good intentions, they could interfere with your board. It sounds like this may be what happened in your case.

A few tips going forward:

  • Avoid using “Anyone with the link can edit” if you’re unsure who might access the board. Use view-only links where possible.

  • Remove the public link or restrict access to “Only team members” if the board is sensitive.

  • Consider creating backups of important boards by exporting them to PDF or using Google Drive (as it sounds like you’ve been doing already — great move!).

Since your board shows no recent activity or history, and the content can’t be recovered, it’s possible it was manually deleted some time ago or in a way that can’t be tracked on the Free plan.

If you’d like, I can connect you to Miro Support so they can confirm whether any recovery is possible. Otherwise, I just want to say — you're absolutely not alone in this, and I admire how calmly you’re handling it.

Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Thank you so much for confirming my fears.

This is most unfortunate.

With no possibility of proving this - I shall go ahead and re build it and no longer share the link with this colleague.

Many thanks for all of you help and kindness.

It is so appreciated.

Hi @Cara Harrison,

I think your plan to keep tighter control over access going forward is a smart one.

If there's anything I can do to help please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m wishing you smooth sailing from here on out.
