I just experienced this issue today but I can’t place sticky notes anywhere I want on a board, instead it’s grouping them together in a box and won’t allow me to freely move them where I want. It’s also not a grouping/ungrouping issue. I don’t have any grouping set on these sticky notes. This is super frustrating because I have a deadline this afternoon and this is stopping me from meeting my deadline. 

@Clemens Landau - Miro removed this feature. Unfortunately you will need to create new frames which will be in freeform mode by default.

What if the buttons for the grid mode and free form mode don’t appear when you click on a frame? I have frames stuck in grid mode and I can’t get them out. Help!!!

@mdodds  - If your Sticky Notes are in a Frame, then it sounds like you may have grid mode enabled for the frame. Try switching it to freeform mode. Here's an example:
